About Maine Hockey League

Maine Hockey League was founded in 2000. Maine Hockey League Inc. (a 501c3 non-profit organization) is now the parent company of "The Maine Renegades".  The Maine Renegades were established in 2000/2001 and at that time was Maine's only elite youth hockey organization.

Maine Renegades Philosophy and Program:

The Maine Renegades was founded in 2000 with the goal of selecting individuals who have the desire and will to play ice hockey and to play the highest level of hockey the team is able to compete against.   The Renegades program provides a service to youth, through a healthy, competitive athletic experience and training in an atmosphere fostering respect for players, opponents, adults and officials.   The  Maine Hockey League is dedicated to helping young athletes develop their hockey skills, with emphasis on the principles of dedication, teamwork and fair play that will help our players to be good ambassadors of the game of hockey.

The coaches are expected to teach each player what is needed to become not only the best hockey player they can be, but also to be an ambassador for the sport and the State of Maine. The program will ensure that players are prepared both physically and mentally to perform up to their maximum potential in every game and practice. Coaches are expected to develop the player's passion, discipline, talent and knowledge of the game. Coaches are also expected to use hockey as a tool for teaching life skills such as character, teamwork, commitment, honesty and integrity.

Each Maine Renegade team will practice twice each week, typically Tuesday and Friday evening, during the season (September though March). Squirt's and Pee Wee's will share practice ice and Bantam's and Midgets will share practice ice.   USA Hockey recommends a 3 to 1 practice to game ratio. The Maine Renegades try to closely follow this principle and have a 2 to 1 practice to game ratio. All practices will be held at the University of Southern Maine (Olympic size rink).

The Maine Renegades play their game schedule in and belong to the Merrimack Valley League. The Valley League is designed to place each team in a division that is competitive with their skill level. The Valley League makes two division adjustments each season to insure parity within the league and each division.

One of the most important aspects of any youth sports program is the quality of the coach. The Maine Renegades coaching staff is the most experienced coaching staff in southern Maine. All coaches have prior and current high school ice hockey coaching experience and all have coached at the youth hockey travel level. All coaches are USA Hockey certified and are very active in continuing education programs.

The Maine Renegades firmly believe in having fun, teaching hockey, motivating and building character through hard work and discipline. We will not over promise and under deliver. Our motto  to "Play Hard and Have Fun" embodies our philosophy.
